What is CATV (Cable Tele Vision data-highway)

  • General data communication
    • Networking of schools, companies, offices, hospitals...
  • Regional Online service
    • build own homepages
    • social services
    • training and education
    • and much more...
  • Fast Online - Internet access
    • Up to 10,000,000 bits per sec. data communication

The advantages

  • Additional use of already existing infrastructures
  • First step for positioning a telecommunication service
  • Increase of the attractiveness of the cable connection
  • Generation of additional revenues
  • Differentiation to oppositional satellite contributors or telecommunication services

Prerequisites

  • Reverse channel capable infrastructure from the backbone to the antenna socket
  • Adherence to the HF specifications after the network parameters check list
  • Allocation of the cable system into physical cells (100-500 customers per cell)
  • A free TV channel (forward direction)
  • Efficient Internet provider

End to end CATV data network solutions

Daten Netzwerklösung

10.000.000 bits per second - data communication over CATV

Certified for world-wide data communication, Nortel Network offers a complete end to end system with their LANcity products to build a high-speed data network for HF cables and optical fiber. You only need a modem and an Ethernet PC card on the customer side to participate in a LANcity network.

CATV projects in Austria planned and installed by WITKE Ltd.

CATV Projekte in Österreich

Ing. Witke Ltd. already sold and installed more than 45 headends in Austria. In general our satisfied customers bought over 7000 modems from us.

Our first customer in the west http://www.telfs.com
Equipped with a Proxyserver from Witke Ltd. this Provider supplies approx. 300 customers since December 1997.

Nortel Networks LanCity product line

CATV customer solutions:

  • LCP - CATV Modem for up to 16 user

CATV cable system operator solutions:

  • LCT - frequency converter
  • LCH - data channel controller
  • LCN - data channel server
  • LCE - integrated headend

Specifications:

  • LCT Transmaster
input frequency range: 8.75 to 450MHz; adjustable from 0 to -10dBmV
output frequency range: 51 to 550MHz; adjustable from 30 to 50dB
    bandwidth 6MHz (5.2MHz at 3dB)
  • LCH Headend Node
In this unit the digital information is edited for the transmission onto the CATV network.
  • LCE Headend Equipment
Consists in principle of two separated LCT's, two separate LCH's with two power packs and a Diplexer. En eventual diplexer for the second channel has to be installed separately.
  •   LCN Provisioning Server
LCN is based on a relational Microsoft Access data base. All Client and modem adjustments are made via CATV. As also network parameters and user access rights are managed via CATV. Automatic IP addressing and Routing; E-Mail service; Gopher and WWW service.
Hardware prerequisites: 486 CPU, 8MB RAM, Windows 3.1x or higher (95, NT) and a LCx modem.
  • LCP Personal CATV Modem
    personnel modem, plug&play technology.

LanCity LCN specifications

  • data transmission rate 10Mbit/s, type of modulation: QPSK, impedance 75 ohms
  • Transmitter:
    • Frequency range: from 5 to 42MHz
    • 250kHz steps with a bandwidth of 6MHz.
    • Automatic transmission level adjustment: from +30dBmV to +57dBmV.
  • Receiver:
    • Input range: from 54 to 750MHz adjustable in 250kHz steps
    • Dynamic range: from -15dBmV to +15dBmV
    • Carrier to Noise: better than 22dB for BER 1E-8
    • Carrier to Interference: better than 25dB for BER 1E-8

DOCSIS: Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification

The DOCSIS standard is vendor independent and enables joint networks with devices from different manufactures.

In contrast to the American version with 8MHz sender bandwidth, EURO-DOCSIS operates with 6MHz.

In the picture you can see an operational test of 10 DOCSIS modems from different manufacturers.
